How to dice an onion quick and easy hack

How to dice an onion quick and easy

In this tutorial I will be demonstration another useful life hack. How to dice an onion quick and easy. Onions are used in numerous cooking recipes so this is a skill worth acquiring. Some people like to call it chopping onions call it what you like but when you dice anything you are essentially cutting it into cubes. Cubes have 6 sides like this die so worst case scenario is 6 cuts. Now onions have a very favourable anatomy in this regard. Onions are formed in separate layers and if you use this to your advantage it reduces the number of cuts per cube that you need to make considerably. Tip: to get the best result when cutting onions or chopping onions and to save frustration make sure your knife is sharp. And if you want to know the best way to sharpen your kitchen knives watch this video;   https://youtu.be/Pv50N8ujw94

Right let me show you what I mean.

  1. Cut the onion in half lengthwise, top and tail the halves and peel of the outer skin.

If you come in close now this is what I mean about the anatomy of the onion, the onion bulb is made up of these separate layers so effectively nature has made 2 cuts for us top and bottom of each layer (how kind)

So that means Now that the onion is peeled all we have to do is slice it in only 2 planes instead of 3.

  • First plane of slices is a series of parallel longitudinal cuts spaced according to how fine you would like to dice it. Maintain the original shape of the onion with forefinger and thumb gently holding the slices together. Use a broad blade sharp knife to make it easier to maintain the shape of the onion while slicing.
  • The second plane requires cuts at 90° to the first plane and spaced approximately the same distance apart. Once that is done the onion is diced and can be crumbled into tiny cubes or cuboids for the politically correct.

The onion is now ready to be added to your favourite dishes.
