How to fix and service leaky bathroom faucet/tap

This step by step tutorial explains clearly how to fix and service a leaky bathroom tap or faucet. The whole exercise is broken down into the following steps.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the tap/faucet to be serviced.

Open a tap/faucet at a lower level to the Taps/faucets being fixed or serviced. Leave open.

Protect any vulnerable surfaces in bath or basin.

Remove any façade or covering from the taps/faucets.

Carefully unscrew the body of the tap/faucet

Remove old washer.

Screw spindle in clockwise to expose the ‘O’ ring.

Replace ‘O’ ring and washer and apply a bit of ‘O’ ring lubricant to spindle and ‘O’ ring.

  1. Reassemble tap/faucet and turn tap off.
  2. Turn outside tap that was left open off.

  1. Turn water supply back on.
  2. Check for leaks around the tap/faucet body.
  3. Replace any façade.
