Transplant from pot to garden with zero transplant shock

In the video tutorial (below) I demonstrate to beginners how to transplant a plant from a nursery pot to a prepared hole in the garden. The technique I use to transplant from pot to garden with zero transplant shock is very simple and easy to follow. Below are the steps I use to prepare the hole in the garden and how to transplant causing zero trauma to the plant’s root system or the plant itself.

  1. Dig a hole, in the garden, 3 to 4 times larger than the nursery pot.
  2. Break up any compacted soil in the bottom of the hole.
  3. Add some mulch, and fertilizer and mix it in to some loosened soil at the bottom of the hole.
  4. Pour a bucket of water into the bottom of the hole to attacked root growth
  5. Set a drip irrigator in the bottom of the hole also to attract root growth.
  6. Make a mixture of potting soil, garden soil and fertilizer enough to fill the hole.
  7. Partially fill the hole with the soil mixture to a level that will allow the pot plant to reach the surface of the basin.
  8. Set the pot and plant in the hole ensuring that the level of soil on the stem will be the same before and after transplanting.
  9. Cut out the base of the pot with a box cutter and discard it.
  10. Cut up the side of the pot to 20mm below the top, repeat on the opposite side.
  11. Complete filling the hole around the pot with the soil mixture until level with the top of the pot.
  12. Stake the plant.
  13. Complete the cuts up the sides to the pot with secateurs and slide the 2 sides of the pot out.
  14. Gently compress the soil around the plant.
  15. Establish a basin around the plant and cover the soil with mulch to protect the surface feeder roots.
  16. Set up a drip irrigator in the basin.
  17. Well done!
